Washing machines are incredibly useful modern tools. We can keep our wardrobes fresh and clean during any season, and without having to leave the house. However, no appliance will last forever, and they can run into their share of problems as they age.
One problem commonly experienced by some older machines, is that they will begin to shake violently, a problem often accompanied by a loud banging. While there are several different things which could cause this symptom, it generally has to do with the fact that the internal cylinder is no longer properly secured in its housing.

Water is heavy. When you are washing your clothes, they become soaked, and therefore will be several times their normal weight. When spinning, it is important that all of this energy be distributed evenly and appropriately. A quality washing machine will have many different components which assist in balancing the load, distributing energy, and preventing unnecessary vibration. Having a tendency to overload your washer can cause or exacerbate this problem, so make sure to follow the manufacturers guidelines when deciding how much laundry to put in the machine. Just because it fits inside, doesn’t mean the machine can handle it.

The agitation of the contents of your washer can take a considerable amount of energy, so this motor has quite a job to do. Additionally, consumers want machines which are small, quiet, and reliable. In addition to the fact that these motors often work in environments with high humidity, these factors can mean that a motor might be wearing out for any number of reasons. Thankfully, it is normally fairly easy to identify a problem with the motor. Aside from the obvious issue of a motor simply not turning on, you can do things like listen for changes in the noise it produces to diagnose potential problems. If it is whining, humming differently, or screeching, you should certainly have it examined. Another sense you can use when looking for issues is your sense of smell. If you begin to notice an acrid or burning smell, stop the cycle and call an expert repairman.
Other obvious issues have to do with the movement of liquids in and out of the wash chamber. If there is an issue with the internal plumbing of your washer, you might notice things like your clothes being mostly or completely dry, no soap or other additives entering the solution, or pooling beneath the machine. Thankfully, these problems are often the easiest to fix, and an experienced repairman should be able to figure out the issue and repair whichever part is leaking. Unfortunately, there are still a few causes of this behavior which could mean your entire machine is in need of repair or replacement, such as major cracks in the main system.
Modern washing machines are also integrating more and more computer technology. New machines often display a stunning number of sensors, dials, options, and display settings. And these can be incredibly convenient. These tools not only allow us to better control the conditions under which we wash our clothes (potentially increasing the lifespan of our clothing and increasing our comfort), but also allowing us to easily troubleshoot any problems we may have. However, with added complexity comes the opportunity for added difficulty. As these machines age, you may see problems such as timers functioning inaccurately, imprecise information from sensors, and a general decrease in reliability. These problems are not easy to fix for laymen. Fortunately, repairmen are often able to get supplies straight from manufacturers which allow them to return broken down machines to full functionality.
