How To Clean a Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal offers a quick and convenient way to discard of leftover foods without filling up your trash can with unpleasant odors. As long as you use it correctly and avoid tossing bones, fat, grease and other unapproved items down it, your garbage disposal should offer years of use without breaking or damaging. However, you should still spend some time giving it a good cleaning on occasion. Doing so will allow it to run more efficiently and prevent buildups of bacteria and other germs that may cause odors. When you're ready to clean out your garbage disposal, go ahead and drop a couple ice cubes down it to help remove and loosen up and solid food particles around the blades. It might sound harsh with the blades violently hitting the ice cubes, but it's completely safe and shouldn't cause them any damage. In fact, some people believe it actually sharpens the blades, allowing it to cut more smoothly. You don't have to drop a full cup or bowl of ice down the garbage disposal, but instead just use 2-3 small cubes. There are several different ways to clean out a garbage disposal, but one of the easiest and arguably most effective is with a combination of vinegar and baking soda. This is a powerful all-natural cleaning solution that's used for a variety of purposes. Start by pouring approximately 1/2 cup of baking soda down the garbage disposal and allow it to sit for 5 minutes. Next, pour 3/4-1 cup of white vinegar down the sink. Be warned, though, this combination will result in an eruption that shoots back out through the drain.

The cleaning process begins to work immediately once the vinegar and baking soda is combined, but it's still a good idea to let it sit for another 5-10 minutes. Doing so will allow the ingredients to loosen up any stubborn food particles that stuck deep inside the garbage disposal. Once the 10 minutes has passed, pour a medium-sized pot of hot water down the garbage disposal to rinse it out. Sorry if you were expecting more, but that's all it takes to clean out a garbage disposal! If you take the time to clean your garbage disposal at least once every month, it will run more efficiently and smoothly. The entire process should only take about 25 minutes, most of which is simply waiting. Make a note on your calender as a reminder to clean your garbage disposal if you have a problem remembering.
